Description

Join us in preparing for the installation of a new courtyard garden at Anacostia High School! Join us for a very special volunteer event! Anacostia High School is renovating their school courtyard with some beautiful new landscaping. This new plan includes a food forest, pollinator garden and berry patch, meditation labyrinth, memorial garden, and picnic area, and will bring new life and joy to this space and all the students who pass through it! The work we will be doing will be in preparation for our planting crew to come in the following week and finalize the plantings. We will be running supplies including dirt, gravel, mulch, etc, through the school and into the courtyard and spreading and preparing them for the finalization of the work. ***Please note: This event will include a fair amount of physical labor (carting heavy bags of materials around the site, moving gravel, etc). Please only sign up if you are physically able to participate and can adequately lift heavy loads. If you are unable to participate in this event due to physical constraints we encourage you to sign up for one of our tree care events that are less physically challenging - or one of our Meet In The Park events to engage with our trees in a fun and more accessible manner! COVID-19 Policy: Casey Trees is now requiring all volunteers to be fully vaccinated to attend our events. Please check "yes" while registering to confirm your vaccination status. If you are unvaccinated you will not be able to attend this event. We will be moving throughout the school hallways during this event and will require all volunteers to wear masks while indoors. Requirements Register: Register in advance. Space is limited. If your plans change prior to the event, please update your registration status so we are sure to have the necessary number of volunteers. Waiver: All volunteers must pre-register and sign a completed volunteer waiver form BEFORE participating in the Tree Care event. Youth Volunteers: Unfortunately we are not accepting volunteers under the age of 18 for this event. Please check back this fall. Clothes: Dress comfortably and appropriately for the weather. We recommend long pants and other protections for sun, bugs and poison ivy. Shoes: Close toed shoes required, boots are preferred over sneakers. Skills: No specific skills or tools required. Each event starts with a tool safety and planting demonstration. Volunteers work alongside experienced Team Leaders and staff. Arrival: Arrive on time. Check-in opens at 8:30am, a half hour prior to the indicated start time and volunteers must be present for the tool safety demonstration at the start of the event. Water: Bring a full water bottle! Water will be available on site if needed. Food: No food will be provided on site, please pack in any food you would like to eat during the event. Animals: No animals are allowed into the event, except for service animals. Group Registration If you represent a group (5+ people), complete the Group Volunteer Request Form and we will contact you to discuss potential volunteer opportunities. Fill out the form here! Getting There Public Transportation: The closest metrobus stop is the Anacostia High School stop, served by buses A31, A32, A33.
