LINDENHURST, NY — The Lindenhurst Board of Education released a statement to Patch on Friday, regarding their vote against suing New York State over a controversial school mask mandate. At a public meeting Wednesday, the board voted 6 to 3 against joining the Massapequa and Locust Valley school districts' Article 78 lawsuit. The vote left many Lindenhurst residents angry and upset. In their statement, the board addressed the frustration of community members. "As a board of education, we understand that occasionally we will deal with topics that could elicit strong feelings for various reasons from our community members, especially when those issues directly impact our children. We also recognize that, at times, our residents have conflicting viewpoints on a variety of issues," the statement read. The board continued to acknowledge respect for all who voiced their opinions at the meeting, and encouraged others to do the same. "As a board, we respect and value each person's opinion and input, as we all share the commongoal of creating the best school environment for our community's children," the statement read. "There is room for healthy debate on all issues, as long as that debate is conducted in a respectful manner." The statement concluded with the goal of prioritizing students and staff with civility and consideration. "Our hope is that as a community, with the singular focus of doing what is best for our studentsand staff, we will be able to explore these challenging situations with grace, dignity and respectfor one another moving forward."
