Description
DARIEN, CT — A Darien resident recently lost over $10,000 after being contacted by a phone scammer, according to police.
In a news release, Police Sgt. Dan Skoumbros said a Hancock Lane resident received a phone call on Oct. 5 from someone claiming to work at Amazon, who informed her a MacBook computer had been purchased for $1,500 on her account and shipped to Ohio.
In an alleged attempt to issue a refund, the caller asked the resident for her driver's license and debit card information. The resident also provided remote access to her personal computer but refused requests to purchase gift cards, Skoumbros said.
The resident's bank later notified her a total of $10,800 had been withdrawn from her account, Skoumbros said.
