Description

BRIDGEPORT, CT — A 16-year-old boy was killed in what police said appeared to be an accidental shooting Monday night in Bridgeport. Police responded to Valley Avenue around 6 p.m. on the report of a person shot. Officers found the victim, 16-year-old Nigel Powell, who had been shot in the head, according to police. Powell was taken to Saint Vincent's Hospital, where he later died, police said. The shooting was originally reported as self-inflicted, according to police. However, police said further investigation and witness statements confirmed that Powell was with three other juveniles and one had a handgun. Police said one of the juveniles was "playing with the gun" when it went off and struck Powell. The shooting remains under investigation, according to police. Just a gut punch. Awful. My heart goes out to the family. https://t.co/SrnXIqSxCT— Chris Murphy (@ChrisMurphyCT) October 12, 2021
