AUSTIN, TX — Rapper Megan Thee Stallion took a moment out of her set at Austin City Limits Festival over the weekend to slam Texas' restrictive abortion law. The rapper, who was born in San Antonio and grew up in Houston, used her set on Saturday as an opportunity to vent her anger toward the state's controversial bill that is considered to be the U.S. most restrictive ban on abortions. "This middle finger is also to these motherf---ing men that want to tell us what the f--- to do with our body," the rapper said as the crowd of festivalgoers roared and waved their middle fingers in agreement. "'Cause how the f--- you gonna tell me what to do with my motherf---ing body? Drop that sh--," she continued. Live in Austin? Following the festival, Megan took to Instagram to discuss her frustrations with the new bill writing, "Y'all know I'm a Texas girl and we deserve better! Politicians want to cut off abortion access and control our bodies, lives, and futures — I'm speaking up." She concluded her post with the "#BansOffOurBodies" hashtag and a text code for fans to take action. Through the law, private citizens can sue health care providers who perform abortions after around six weeks gestation. The law currently does not provide any exceptions for cases of rape or incest. During weekend one of ACL, headliner Billie Eilish also bashed the state's abortion law stating she "almost didn't want to do the show" in order "to punish this (expletive) place for allowing that to happen here." However, she said she didn't do that because Texans are the real victims of the law. "You guys deserve everything in the world," Eilish said. "And we need to tell them to shut the f--- up!" The two aren't the only artists who tore into the state's decision to pass the law during the two weekend music festival. Eilish's brother Finneas, a popular singer-songwriter, cursed Gov. Greg Abbott during his set on Oct. 1 and pledged to donate his ACL check to Planned Parenthood, according to the Austin American-Statesman. In an Instagram post on the same night, singer Phoebe Bridgers also said she was donating her show proceeds to abortion funds in the state. Government agencies such as the city of Austin and the U.S. Department of Justice are fighting back, citing the law was enacted "in open defiance of the Constitution." Three days after the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reinstated the law, the Biden administration urged the courts again Monday night to step in and suspend the law. The days ahead could now be key in determining the immediate future of Senate Bill 8, including whether there is another attempt to have the U.S. Supreme Court weigh in. If Texas's scheme is permissible, no constitutional right is safe from state-sanctioned sabotage of this kind," the Justice Department told the appeals court.
