CHATHAM, NJ — A man faces several charges, including DWI, after Chatham Borough Police say he crashed his car and left the scene, before police caught up with him.
According to Michael E. Bochniak, a spokesperson for the department, the unidentified man was stopped as he was driving through the borough on the night of Oct. 4, after the responding officer, Sgt. Daniel Walsh, watched him pass by on River Road, then heard a crashing sound.
After Walsh drove toward that area, he saw that the man had hit a curb and drove onto a lawn before taking off, Bochniak said in a news release on Tuesday for the department.
Walsh was able to stop the driver, 46 and from Midland Park, then the Chatham Emergency Squad took him to the hospital. While the man was there, Walsh obtained a draw blood warrant, Bochniak said.
In addition to DWI, Bochniak said the man has been charged with reckless driving, leaving the accident scene and failure to provide registration, inspection, insurance cards and to maintain the car's lights.
