ROMEOVILLE, IL — This year's Hero Helps Community Summit will be held on Friday in Romeoville. The event, which is also the 10th anniversary summit, will focus on addressing the rise in opioid abuse at the local, state and federal level, according to a news release from the county. The annual event is a partnership between several community organizations, including the Will County State's Attorney's Office, Will County Executive's Office and Heroin Epidemic Relief Organization (HERO). The event is designed for health professionals and members of the community who want to learn more, according to the release. The event will include resource booths, a memorial tent and the In Plain Sight trailer, which features a mock room giving examples of where people can hide drugs. Dr. Rebecca Baker, from the National Institute of Health's Helping to End Addiction Long Term initiative, and David Jones from the Illinois Department of Human Services will both speak at Friday's event at the Romeoville Athletic and Event Center, 55 Phelps Ave. The event schedule will be: Resource expo, 7:30 to 9:15 a.m.In Plain Sight trailers, 7:30 to 9:15 a.m.Welcome from Mayor John Noak, Will County Executive Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant and Will County State's Attorney Jim Glasgow, 9:30 a.m.Federal, state and local opioid overdose initiatives program at 9:45 a.m.Programs from various county organizations, 10:35 a.m.Q&A, 11 a.m.11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Naloxone training and overdose education According to the Will County Coroner's Office, there have been 73 heroin/fentanyl overdose deaths in the county in 2021.
