OAKDALE, MN — A 32-year-old Oakdale resident was arrested Monday after a standoff during which gunfire was exchanged with police. The incident happened at an apartment building near Tartan High School and Oakdale Elementary School. Both schools went into lockdown. At about 2:40 p.m., Oakdale police officers arrived at the apartment complex on the 900 block of Greenway Avenue after gunshots were fired in the area. Police began speaking with a man "in crisis" who was near a third-floor window. During that time, the Washington County SWAT team, professional negotiators, and officers from Woodbury arrived at the scene. At one point, the man fired a handgun at officers and police returned fire, according to authorities. There were no injuries. The man retreated from the window and came back without a gun, police said. Negotiators were "eventually successful" and the man surrendered, according to a news release. The man was transported to Regions Hospital for treatment of wounds from broken glass. Charges against the man are pending, authorities said.
