Hello, neighbors! Jeri Karges here with today's issue of the Concord Daily. First, today's weather: Cool with plenty of sunshine. High: 70 Low: 47. Here are the top stories in Concord today: A devastated father is warning other parents that "one pill can kill" as he found out with his daughter early this school year. Walter Langhammer's 14-year-old daughter, Valentina, whom he called Titi, died of what investigators believe was an accidental fentanyl overdose in August. Titi was a freshman at Concord High School. Her father believes she took half a pill that she got at school to help her relax before bed. She never woke up. Police believe she likely took a counterfeit pill that was laced with fentanyl. Langhammer is hoping to spread awareness about the dangers of counterfeit pills and fentanyl, and pleads for families to talk with their kids about what's going on. (CBS San Francisco) The Concord City Council on Tuesday will consider accepting a $30,000 grant from Marathon Petroleum for the police department to start an unmanned aerial system (drone) program. Walnut Creek, San Ramon, Lafayette, Richmond, Antioch, and Pittsburg already have drone programs in place. Concord police held a series of virtual community meetings earlier this year to help form policy on using drones and have been borrowing drones from neighboring cities for the past few years. A staff report for Tuesday's meeting says the drone program will not be used to conduct random surveillance, or carry weapons, or target people based solely on actual or perceived characteristics. (Claycord.com)The drought is bringing a scary year to farmers in Contra Costa County and across the state. One beef and pear farm in Martinez is working to scrape by this year in hopes of a better winter and relief for its orchard and cattle. Alhambra Valley Pears & Beef comprises two neighboring ranches that came together in 1941 when Emma Sindicich married Edward Pereira – combining pear orchards and a cattle ranch. The hills and orchards are dry and brown, and the soil is parched and dusty this year due to the drought. The 500 pear trees, some more than 80 years old, are still producing, but the drought has shortened the growing season. Small farms like Alhambra Valley don't have the resources that larger farms have during a crisis such as this, so please support them at your local farmers market when you can. (Pioneer Publishers)The giant fall book sale sponsored by the Friends of Moraga Library will be held on Saturday, October 16th from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm at the Moraga Library (1500 St. Mary's Road). (News 24/680)Power outages in Walnut Creek, Danville-San Ramon, and Brentwood were reported with thousands left without power and intersections left without traffic lights.
