Press release from the City of Dunwoody: 10/12/2021 11:12 a.m. Dunwoody, GA – October 12, 2021 – The Georgia Recreation and Parks Association (GRPA) recognized Dunwoody Parks and Recreation as District 6 Agency of the Year during its annual banquet last week. The award salutes excellence and leadership in providing quality recreation programs, parks and facilities that enhance the quality of life in communities.  "I'm proud of our team for their creativity and commitment during such a challenging year with COVID," said Dunwoody Parks and Recreation Director Brent Walker. "We have never lost sight of the important role our parks and programs play in the recovery." Dunwoody's parks team introduced new programs during the early days of the pandemic, including a community pen pal initiative called "Letters to Seniors" and drive-thru Halloween event. Outdoor programming ramped up over the summer with the first concert series at the new Brook Run Park Amphitheater. Dunwoody Parks and Rec also opened the new Waterford Park, completed the demolition of the former Austin Elementary School to make way for future park space, and supported the purchase of nine acres of additional park space on Vermack Road. "This award is given by other parks professionals and shows the commitment the City has made to its parks system," Walker added. "We're ready for the challenges ahead and excited about the opportunities." GRPA was formed in 1945 as a private, non-profit institution to support and promote the recreation and park industries within the state of Georgia. District 6 covers DeKalb County and 21 other counties in middle and north Georgia.
