Description

Please join ICRI New England for a dinner presentation by Jensen Hughes on their experience on specialty consulting on discharge structures. Please join ICRI New England for our first post-covid, in-person dinner presentation. We're looking forward to get together again. With everchanging local regulations on mask use and other covid precautions, we will provide more information on this as we get closer. Registration is also open for tabletop vendors related to the this topic. Presentation Abstract: The Jensen Hughes Concrete Materials + Engineering Team has provided specialty engineering consulting and laboratory analysis services to extend the service life of a severely deteriorated water discharge structure. A 1.2 km (4,000 ft) long concrete discharge structure treats and returns 950,000 cubic meters per hour of chloride-containing water back to the ocean through a series of cascading concrete aerating structures and channels. The concrete structure was completed in 2010 with an intended 50-year service life. Since going into service in 2011, the structure has exhibited signs of significant deterioration, including cracking, spalling, and reinforcement corrosion. Jensen Hughes conducted on-site condition assessments, non-destructive testing, and sample extraction to perform an evaluation of the structure. Information from these analyses and petrographic examination was used to developed repair designs, construction sequencing, and structural analysis for temporary works to help the structure achieve another 30 years of service life. In addition, to develop the construction documents including design and structural/material/construction specifications, Jensen Hughes implemented an impressed current cathodic protection system to provide additional corrosion mitigation for the structure. This project was faced with many challenges including, extreme temperatures, chloride exposures, operational restrictions and limitations, variability in original construction quality, and severely deteriorated concrete. Presenter: Liying Jiang, Senior Engineer at Jensen Hughes. Liying is an ICRI New England board member and active participant in the concrete repair community. Event Timeline:  5:30 p.m. Networking & Cocktails 6:00 p.m. Buffet Dinner  6:30 p.m. Round Table Discussion The New England Chapter of the International Concrete Repair Institute.
