In its 35th year, the Keating contest is a daylong writing competition among the premier journalism students at Indiana colleges and universities. Since its inception, the program has awarded roughly $170,000 in cash prizes. The competition is named after former Indianapolis Star columnist Thomas R. Keating. Our dinner speaker is Sarah Bahr, who was a Keating finalist in 2017. She currently is a regular freelance writer for The New York Times. Bahr has been affiliated with The New York Times since June 2019 when she worked as an editor on the Flexible Editing Desk. In June 2020, she received a prestigious yearlong Culture Reporting Fellowship at The New York Times. She also worked at The Indianapolis Star between 2018 and 2019 in addition to being a Pulliam Fellow there. While she was an undergraduate at IUPUI, she was an editorial intern at Indianapolis Monthly, for which she continues to freelance. Bahr also received her master’s degree in English from IUPUI.
