Description

65th Anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution: Georgia Statue Unveiling & Exhibit For the past two years, we've been working to preserve the legacy of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution by creating a new statue to honor Hungarian freedom fighters. Our Freedom Fighter statue will serve as a permanent reminder of this historic time in history, located in the Capital of the South – Atlanta, GA. To date, there are 20 memorials to 1956, including 10 statues, across the United States, but this would be the first in Georgia. The Hungarian American Coalition, working with the Honorary Consul General of GA, has raised over $80,000 to create this statue, including an initial grant from the Hungarian Embassy. More than 40 individuals have donated, as well as 10 organizations, making this a true Hungarian American community initiative. On October 23, 2021, we will unveil the statue in Stan Mullin's Art Studio in Athens, GA. Mullins is the local, GA-based sculptor with an international reputation. Read more about his career here. Our special guest will be H.E. Ambassador Szabolcs Takacs, Hungarian Ambassador to the United States as well as community leaders from across Georgia and local '56-ers. The commemorative event will also include a multimedia exhibit and a small reception.
