CANTON, MA - Honey Dew Donuts offered a special treat Monday - "cop cakes" - in support of a retired Canton detective who now is in need of an accessible vehicle. The location at 375 Neponset St. hosted a fundraiser to assist John Ruane and his wife, Renee Ruane, in purchasing an accessible vehicle. John Ruane comes from a tradition of service. Both his father and his grandfather were Canton Police chiefs. In addition to being a detective, he also is an Army veteran. He has spent most of his life serving his country and then the Town of Canton. Renee Ruane also works for the Town of Canton and has served in the United States Army. "This is a family that gave so much of themselves, and now we as a community need to give back in their time of need," said Honey Dew manager Alecia Harris in a Facebook post. The post noted that John was forced into early retirement due to an inoperable malignant brain tumor. This has caused him to rely completely on a wheelchair. They do not have an accessible vehicle, and it has become extremely difficult for John to travel. "We have put together a fundraising event that has many options, and we expect to keep spreading the word until enough money is raised to purchase the vehicle," Harris said in the post. The vanilla cupcakes, which have buttercream frosting and blue sprinkles, cost $2. The entire amount will be donated to the couple. The franchise is also trying to raise money. Cash or checks payable to John Ruane may be dropped off at the Neponset Street Honey Dew location. Money can be donated via Venmo to Ruth Ruane. Information on upcoming fundraisers will be available in the coming weeks.
