MIDDLETOWN, CT — The Indian Hill Cemetery in Middletown was vandalized Monday, according to police.
A motorist called police around 10:30 a.m. to report that someone had spray painted the sign and brownstone wall of the Indian Hill Cemetery at 383 Washington St., according to Lt. Brian Hubbs.
Hubbs said arriving officers found that someone had used pink spray paint to write "Land Back" with an anarchy symbol on the cemetery's sign.
The same suspect(s) also painted expletives about Christopher Columbus on the brownstone wall beneath the sign, according to Hubbs.
Police believe the vandalism occurred during the overnight hours. Police are investigation and officers are checking the area for witnesses and/or video evidence of the crime, according to Hubbs.
"The sign and wall have since been covered to prevent the profanities from being seen by the public and cemetery personnel are already working on a plan to begin cleanup efforts," Hubbs wrote in a news release. "They suspect the cost of cleanup to be 'several hundred dollars.'"
Hubbs said it was later determined that the suspects had also spray-painted expletives about the police on another smaller segment of the brownstone wall that was not visible to the public.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Jason Tetrault at 860-638-4000.
