ASHBURN, VA — Dominion Energy is holding a virtual community meeting on Nov. 18 to discuss a new transmission project in the Route 28 corridor of Loudoun County. The one-hour community meeting begins at 5 p.m. The $25 million project, which will include construction of a new substation along Atlantic Blvd. near Dulles Town Center, is designed to serve the electrical load of a planned new data center in the area. Rapid growth in electric power demand, particularly in eastern Loudoun County, which is home to the largest concentration of data centers in the world, has resulted in the need to build the new transmission line and substation. Dominion said aging assets that are decades old need to be replaced in order to provide reliable electricity to the area. The project will include the installation of new galvanized steel structures. The proposed routes for the double-circuit transmission line are estimated to be 1.5 miles to 2.5 miles long and, if approved by regulators and regional grid operator, will connect transmission lines at the BECO Substation, on the west side of Route 28, to the new Dulles Town Center (DTC) Substation east of Route 28. (Dominion Energy) The BECO Station is located at 21391 Pacific Blvd., near the Washington Football Team's training complex. The proposed data center campus in the Ashburn area is projected to require electric load in excess of 100 megawatts, according to documents submitted by Dominion Energy to the PJM Interconnection, the electric grid operator for the mid-Atlantic area.
