SUMMIT, NJ — As the Delta variant of COVID-19 continues to take lives in many states, Summit released its latest case numbers on Friday. Amid the rise of the highly transmissible variant, 29 more cases were confirmed among Summit residents from Oct. 1-7, the city said. That was up slightly from 21 two weeks earlier. There were no new confirmed COVID deaths in Summit. The numbers are still lower than in January 2021, before the vaccine was widely available, a month in which 263 cases were diagnosed among Summit residents and two died. Case numbers dwindled in May and June as vaccinations increased, and the city stopped releasing weekly reports. But with the transmissible Delta variant, cases are rising again. Recent charts from one group of North Jersey hospitals show that most people who are hospitalized with the virus have not been vaccinated. People under 12 still cannot be vaccinated. As of Sunday night, 711,020 Americans have died from COVID, up 11,000 from a week ago. In New Jersey 923 people were in hospitals battling the virus on Friday, 122 of those on ventialtors.
