By Editor, Times of San Diego October 11, 2021 San Diego County health officials reported 122 new cases of COVID-19 –the lowest daily count since the Delta variant took hold – and no deaths Sunday. With the latest numbers, the county's case total during the pandemic rose to 361,039. The death toll remained at 4,113. The drop in local COVID numbers mirrors the national trend. A Reuters tally shows there were a little more than 100,000 reported cases on average each day recently. That's 40% of the peak infection rate in January. The January numbers reflected last winter's pandemic surge, followed by a new spate of infections due to the Delta variant over the summer. In California, there have been 4.5 million COVID cases and 69,507 deaths. The U.S. has recorded 44.3 million cases and 713,154 deaths. Reuters contributed to this report.
