Welcome to the Sacramento Daily Patch Newsletter! This is where you will find all of the best news and events happening in Sacramento for Tuesday October 12th, 2021! First, today's weather: Sunny, breezy and cool. High: 69 Low: 46. Here are the top stories today in Sacramento: When you think of spirits for Halloween, are you thinking the creepy kind or the boozy kind? Whichever is your fancy, you can find it at the Ten Ten Room this month which is doing a Halloween pop-up. The bar is transformed into a creepy crypt where you can have drinks like the Lord's Lament or the Murder of Crows. Maybe wait until you've had one too many before you have the tipsy gypsy tell your fortune. Fun times fit for the season! (FOX40) Remember the Sleep Train's Dale Carlson? He retired from the mattress business, but now he's working to make foster youth more supported in our community. As part of that he and his wife Katy have partnered with UC Davis Health to transform a shared vision into reality: a comprehensive, trauma-informed program to support foster youth in all aspects of wellness, including mental health. The Carlsens' $2.55 million gift to UC Davis Health provides start-up funds for the program as well as an endowment for sustained support. (UC Davis Health) Whoever thought of this should get some kind of prize. It's brilliant. Former "grow houses" or houses where illegal marijuana was grown, are getting a new life as affordable housing. As part of the penalty for the illegal grows, the homeowners were given a choice of paying a fine or donating their house to Habitat for Humanity. Leah Miller, president and CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento said as soon as a former grow house has been donated, her team begins the process to remodel and find a new tenant. But habitat does not simply hand over the home to the new tenant. To get the house with its affordable mortgage rate the tenant must put in 500 "sweat equity" hours, or physical work to help remodel the new home. I wonder if the cannabis grower gets the donation write-off? (FOX40) Southwest Airlines canceled dozens of flights in and out of Sacramento International Airport (SMF) over the weekend. At SMF, 33 flights were canceled as of 3 p.m. Sunday. Thirty-one of those flights were canceled by Southwest. As of Monday afternoon the schedule was still a mess and Southwest was still cancelling flights - just as most of us were thinking of taking to the friendly skies again. (KCRA3) A party in South Sacramento went very wrong on Sunday night ending in a shooting with 1 person dead and another taken to the hospital. The incident happened on Summerbrook Way. Police say this is one of "dozens" of crimes that have taken place recently within a 1 mile radius of the house in question, including robberies and assaults. Authorities are still trying to piece together what led up to the shooting. (CBS Sacramento) Today's Sacramento Daily is brought to you by Ring, a Patch Brand Partner.
