Strauss. With the end of the Civil War in 1865, the United States turned to mend the sectional differences that had separated the country with four years of bloody Civil War. This new era, known to historians as the Reconstruction Era, ran from 1865-1877, until the withdrawal of Federal Troops from the south under the presidency of Rutherford B. Hayes. Both military and civilian records will help piece together the history of our families during this difficult period of time in the United States. Michael L.
