AVON TOWNSHIP, IL — A person has been hospitalized in unstable condition after he went underwater while boating in Grayslake Saturday morning, fire officials said.
The Grayslake Fire Protection District responded to the 3000 block of North Circle Drive at 8:20 a.m. for a report of a male who was missing, according to a news release. When they arrived at the scene, rescue crews interviewed bystanders and quickly determined where the man went under water.
Divers found the man within five minutes and brought him to shore where they began to resuscitate him, according to fire officials. He was taken to the hospital in unstable condition.
Fire officials did not provide more details surrounding the incident and why the man went under water.
Following the incident, and several similar incidents in Lake County this year, fire officials are urging residents to wear life jackets when boating.
In August, a Palatine Police Department officer drowned after he jumped off a boat and didn't resurface at Round Lake Beach, and in late July, a 35-year-old Schaumburg man found unresponsive in the waters off Fort Sheridan Beach in July later died. Meanwhile, a 43-year-old Joliet man died after he jumped into the Chain O' Lakes to help a child who was struggling in the water.
In late August, authorities used dental records to help identify the body found in Lake Michigan a few miles away from Waukegan Harbor as Yarianna Wheeler, 19, who most recently lived in Chicago and is originally from west suburban Bellwood.
Wheeler was 6 to 7 months pregnant at the time of her death, police said.
