BERKELEY, CA — Forecasts calling for high winds and low humidity have prompted the National Weather Service to issue a red flag warning for parts of the Bay Area including the Berkeley hills. The red flag warning went into effect Sunday night at 11 p.m. and the area will remain under the warning until Tuesday at 5 p.m. 🚨 🚩Red Flag Warnings 🚩🚨remain in effect for the North Bay Mountains and East Bay hills and valleys as well as the Santa Cruz Mountains, Santa Lucia Mountains, and the interior mountains of San Benito and Monterey Counties.#CAwx #CAfire pic.twitter.com/C5RvsV1zEx— NWS Bay Area (@NWSBayArea) October 10, 2021 The warning means that critical fire weather conditions are expected during this time frame. Gusty northerly winds are expected to top out over 60 mph combined with dry conditions amid a historic drought have fire officials throughout much of the Bay Area including Berkeley on alert. "A Red Flag Warning issued for the hills of Berkeley and much of the East Bay means that hills residents need to be ready to evacuate, and should take precautions to stop fires before they start," city officials said in a statement. "For Berkeley, the greatest risk is forecasted to be during the day on Monday. Fires that start during Red Flag Warnings can spread quickly."
