In need of family puppy to become family dog

My son just turned 10 and is looking for a puppy. He would like it to be able to play fetch and I would like it to get along with cats and children. Preferably a breed that doesn't shed much and medium sized or smaller. Not looking for a pure bred, actually prefer mut/shelter, but having trouble finding what we want.
