Description

Take our 3-hour workshop to build your very own Crate Chair following Rietveld’s design from almost 100 years ago. Looking for a simple, elegant, modern solution to a lack of seating? The Crate Chair was created by Dutch Architect Gerrit Rietveld. In the 1930’s wooden crates were everywhere as an easy way to transport goods. Rietveld created a simple design to reuse the crates and turn them into furniture for the masses. The Crate Chair design is durable and can be used for indoor or outdoor seating. Today we celebrate Gerrit Rietveld as an early pioneer of reuse, making his design the perfect chair to build using our reclaimed materials. Our 25,000 square foot retail warehouse provides affordable reclaimed building materials to the general public. Our public workshops educate Chicago-area residents on how to use reclaimed materials and live more sustainably. RX Made, our in-house custom fabrication workshop, demonstrates the potential reuse of our materials through the creation of beautiful, repurposed furniture. Our employment training program provides opportunities for Chicagoans with barriers to employment to earn transferable skills and certifications through on-the-job training and find pathways to permanent employment.
