HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL — The Cahn Fellows Programs, the country's premier organization specifically designed to support the growth of exemplary school leaders in large metropolitan school districts, announceD the 2021-2022 Cahn Fellow nominees for the Distinguished Principals Program for the Tampa cohort. Four high-performing principals will join the cohort and experience professional, intellectual, and personal growth through a curriculum tailored to the needs of today's school leaders, featuring faculty from Teachers College, Columbia University, that is designed to increase leadership skills, retention in education and student outcomes. New Cahn Fellow nominees to the 2021-22 Tampa cohort class for the CPF Distinguished Principals Program include: Kilsys Batista, Twin Lakes Elementary SchoolJohnny Bush, Henry B. Plant High SchoolClaire Mawhinney, Randall Middle SchoolLarissa McCoy-Mitti, A.P. Leto High School As part of the yearlong program, Cahn Fellows and their ally (an aspiring school leader chosen by each Fellow) are asked to identify a leadership challenge they are facing in their school that will have a positive impact on student achievement when addressed effectively. This focus on real challenges with measurable results allows Cahn principals to more readily apply academic research to practice and take an active approach to their learning. Throughout the year Fellows and allies study a core leadership curriculum designed to address issues urban school leaders face today, including the impacts of racism and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout the course of study Fellows will learn from leadership experts and Cahn Alumni Advisors while studying topics that include school culture and climate, data inquiry, neuroscience of leadership, 360 assessment, effective communication, wellness for leaders, organizational change, and diversity, equity & inclusion. At the end of the year-long program, Cahn Fellows and Allies present their research findings at the CFP Annual Leadership Conference. During these challenging times it's important that school leaders are offered the opportunity and resources to continue their professional and personal growth," said Dr. Barbara McKeon, senior program director of The Cahn Fellows Programs. "Our Fellows have made demonstrable changes in the schools and cities they serve. Schools with Cahn Fellow principals receive higher school Quality Review ratings and have improved student outcomes in math, ELA and student attendance as compared to their counterparts. We're excited to see the impact this new group of outstanding school leaders will have on their students, teachers and schools." Since 2002, the Cahn Fellows Programs have been committed to recognizing outstanding principals and providing them with opportunities for professional, intellectual and personal growth. Its goal is to strengthen the urban public school system nationally by investing in its most effective school leaders; providing distinguished school leaders with advanced professional development and recognition. Currently, there are CFP cohorts in New York City (all five boroughs), Chicago, Dallas, San Antonio, Denver/Aurora, Miami, Tampa, Atlanta and Los Angeles.
