Here are the top stories today in Des Moines: Several dozen people gathered at 12th and Walnut streets Friday night to "hold the Des Moines Police Department accountable" for a shooting that took place last week. On Tuesday, a Des Moines police officer shot multiple rounds at a 35-year-old woman who was allegedly wielding a knife. As of Thursday, the woman was still hospitalized and in critical condition. (Des Moines Register) On Friday, Science for Safe Schools and the Disability Caucus of the Iowa Democratic Party held a pop-up COVID-19 memorial at Iowa State Capitol. Nearly 7,000 white flags were placed on the Capitol lawn, each one dedicated to Iowans who have lost their lives to COVID-19. Citizens were able to write down the names of lost loved ones on each flag, similar to the installation on the National Mall. (KGAN TV) A staffing shortage among child care providers is affecting Des Moines metro families with working parents, who are struggling to find daycare centers with sufficient capacity and capabilities for their needs.
