AVONDALE, AZ — A man who authorities say attacked a sheriff's deputy was later shot by a homeowner in Tonopah late Saturday night, according to officials with the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. A search for 30-year-old Clinton Robert Hurley ended when he was found near a home at 373rd Avenue and Buckeye Road, a spokesman for the sheriff's office told media outlets. Hurley tried breaking into the victim's home just before he was shot, according to a report from ABC-15 in Phoenix. Hurley attacked the Maricopa County deputy as he was being processed for warrants at a substation near Dystart Road and Van Buren Street in Avondale, the report states. A Maricopa County Sheriff's Office social media statement says Hurley fled in the sheriff's Tahoe, then abandoned it and carjacked another vehicle as authorities searched for him. The deputy has been placed on life support, with the situation "dire," a sheriff's official said after his capture. An update on the deputy's condition was not available as of 7:30 a.m. Sunday. Hurley, who ABC reports, was recently released from the Arizona Department of Corrections for sex offenses against children, was hospitalized in critical condition after he was found following the shooting. He and the homeowner have a "history" with each other, officials said. Hurley has a "history of violence," police added. The wounded deputy has been on the force for three years, ABC reported.
