Personally, in have 25 years experience playing, but I am not the sort of player who likes to "break the ice" with another person, or a band, by playing Sweet Home Alabama or any other well known songs where their songbooks are well distributed.
The best way the me to break the ice with someone musically is to either discuss a key everyone is comfortable with by laying down a nice chord progression and take it from there... Or, have no discussion of key and allow the melody to develop completely organically. This is my preferred method because you can really get a better sense of the collective skill-level, of course, but more importantly just how comfortable ot are with playing in a completely improvised environment.
So, I'd like to meet and jam with people who are excited by the idea of just sitting down with some friends, or meet new friends, to go on a musical road trip where the music guides us.... sometimes we will lead ourselves no where, othertimes, we might jury through different key changes and perhaps touching and/or borrowing from other various styles of music.
For me, this isn't about playing In a bar or impressing other by playing the newest pop 40 songs. For me, and I hope anyone else who might play, the REWARD is the jam, commradaire and the openness
