Press release from the San Leandro Public Library: Oct. 9, 2021 The San Leandro Public Library invites the community to celebrate Filipino American History Month this October. On Saturday, October 16 at 10:30 am, Kariktan Dance Company of Concord will be at the San Leandro Main Library (300 Estudillo Ave. San Leandro, CA 94577). A non-profit organization founded in 2004 to promote the Filipino culture through dances and songs, Kariktan will present a series of beautiful and elegant traditional dances such as Tinikling during Mabuhay! They will talk about the historical significance of the dances and will offer an opportunity for audience participation. Brief talking circles to engage the audience and to-go food tasting pancit and lumpia boxes will follow this free, all-ages community program. This program was made possible with support from California Humanities, a non-profit partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities (www.calhum.org). It is just one event in a series of programs this Fall 2021, "(be)Longing: Woven Into the Fabric of Our Community," whose objective is to invite exploration of and discussion about the cultures of our diverse community. "The diversity of San Leandro is one of its biggest assets. We are thankful for the California Humanities grant to make it possible to celebrate that diversity, says Brian Simons, Library Director. Experiencing a celebration of one's own culture is affirming, and to experience another's culture can be transformative. That's why people travel. But in San Leandro, if we pause to look, listen, taste, and embrace what is around us, we need not travel very far to have that experience."
