World Mental Health Day 2021: Why It Matters and What Can We Do?  After 25 years, acknowledging and celebrating World Mental Health Day offers the opportunity to pause, reflect, and take action to support and strengthen habits, organizations, and practices that promote mental wellness.  Mental health is fundamental to our home, work, and community life.  Right now, we are seeing the effects of COVID-19 exacerbating ongoing challenges in mental health care: stigma and discrimination, lack of access to care, inadequate resources and increasing rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide.  Please know that any action you take to support mental health makes a difference, your actions radiate out to others, and your financial contributions are deeply needed and appreciated.  As you pause to acknowledge and celebrate this day and reflect on your own efforts to support mental wellness, you may find that you would like to both give and receive more support.  We’ve listed below some positive actions you can take for yourself and to support others.      Positive actions for World Mental Health Day:  Feel, express, and explore your feelings—reach out to a friend or loved one to have a conversation about what’s really going on with you, write in a journal about your thoughts and feelings, allow time to FEEL what it’s like to be you. Do something you are good at, something you enjoy. Nourish your body—eat yummy food that offers nutrients, drink fluids that sustain you, exercise and move in ways that are enjoyable, allow yourself to be kind and playful with your physical needs. Contribute your time, talent, and/or treasure to an organization that supports mental health.  These organizations are often underfunded. Take a break. Give yourself a break—try to speak to yourself (in your mind) with the same words and tone you would use with a dear friend, and try to set standards for yourself (in terms of productivity and accomplishment) that you would set for a loved one. Learn more about mental illness, https://nami.org/Home.  Learn more about what keeps us mentally well—there are many sources of information but here are a couple to get you started:  https://centerhealthyminds.org/ https://www.commissionerscottbritton.com/mental-health-resources.   Ask for help. Make someone’s day.Watch: Join Robin Lake, MA, LCSW, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and FSC clinician, as she teaches us the importance of being kind to ourselves, followed by a guided mindfulness session.  Family Service Center continues to be here to help when needed. Reach us at 847-251-7350 | [email protected]                                      Learn more at www.FamilyServiceCenter.comYour efforts make a difference, FSC is grateful for all support we receive from our community: Donate to FSC
