Description

Discover the history, geography, and social dynamics of San Francisco and 1879's "Big Idea" for restoring land for people and nature. Nature in the City is partnering with The Commons San Francisco on a walk that will leave you with a new perspective on the Mission District and how cities can be reshaped around the commons. This walk is planned to coincide with San Francisco's Phoenix Day: held on the anniversary of the 1989 Earthquake, the event this year celebrates the resilience of San Francisco and a return of Sunday Streets. We hope after the walk you'll check out the Phoenix Day event on Valencia that runs from 12-5pm. Walk Details: Join walk leader David Giesen for a performance art and political information walking tour tracing the history of Mission Creek from pre-Spanish days through to the present. First we'll briefly explore the cemetery grounds and Ohlone Museum in the Mission building, then trace bits of now underground Mission Creek, discovering 200 years of a watershed that has sustained communities, but which now plays a leading role in the city's wealth divide. FREE, but the Mission Museum requests a $5 donation for admission. Walk Leader: David Giesen David is a veteran school teacher who has been engaged in public policy advocacy since 1989. He runs the Henry George School of San Francisco, sharing the teachings of the 19th Century social philosopher and economist. Meeting Location:  Meet on the front steps of Mission Dolores. Parking is always tight in the Mission so plan ahead. Transportation: Muni service to the site includes the 22 and 33 busses, and Mission Dolores is a 7 minute walk from the Church metro station. Street parking is available in the neighborhood, but please take note of any time limit restrictions.
