Jazz Night at the Bad Seed featuring members of the Imagine Collective + Rob Tapper and Jazz faculty from University of Montana 7pm - Doors open - food and drink available throughout 7:30 - Duo/trio music begins 8pm - The Imagine Collective performs 9pm - Rob Tapper and Faculty from University of Montana 10pm - end Here is the info on the U of M faculty: Rob Tapper is Professor of Trombone and Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Montana coordinating the UM Jazz Festival, four big bands, seven small groups, an undergraduate Jazz Degree and the trombone studio. A relentless advocate for music education, Rob was awarded a Washington State "2008 Teacher of the Year Award”, was inducted into the WMEA Hall of Fame (2012) and has also received a Spokane Arts Commission “Contributions to Education” Award. As an active performer and teacher in both classical and jazz idioms he has performed, adjudicated and recorded at many festivals, concert halls and conferences in orchestral, jazz and commercial settings around the United States, Europe and Canada. Rob is currently Principal Trombone in the Missoula Symphony and has degrees in Music Education (UNH) and Jazz and Commercial Media (Eastman). Rob is a Getzen clinician and performs exclusively on Getzen trombones. Johan Eriksson is a versatile performer specializing in jazz and classical genres. Originally from Onsala, Sweden, he is Associate Professor of Saxophone and Jazz Studies at the University of Montana. He is proud to be a Yamaha Performing Artist. He is a member of several professional groups including the “Hemispheres Saxophone Quartet” (with Andrew Dahlke, Samuel Williams, Matthew Roehrich), “Three Rivers Saxophone Quartet” (with Jesse Dochnahl, Dylan Dwyer, Robert Prince), “Duo Nyans” (with Christopher Kirkpatrick) and “UMF Woodwind Quintet” (with Margaret Schuberg, Maxine Ramey, Christopher Kirkpatrick, Jennifer Gookin-Cavanaugh). He has recently performed internationally in China, Canada and Sweden with both classical and jazz groups. Johan was the first performer to be invited as both the classical and the jazz artist at the University of Louisville Saxophone Festival. Johan has performed at National Conferences held at the Kansas University, University of Idaho, University of Illinois, Oklahoma State University, California State University-Long Beach, Arizona State University, University of Oregon, University of South Carolina, and the University of North Texas. He has recorded two CDs with the Fred Hess Big Band released by Dazzle Records. This group includes Downbeat Magazine Award Winner Matt Wilson on drums, saxophonist John Gunther (Maria Schneider Orchestra, Village Vanguard Orchestra), Ron Miles (Ellington Orchestra, “Finding Forrester” soundtrack) and other top jazz players from around the country. Johan holds a D.M.A in saxophone pedagogy/performance from the University of Northern Colorado. While in Denver he performed with ASCAP “Emerging Jazz Composer/Arranger” award winner Tyler Gilmore’s group “9th and Lincoln Big Band”, a group featuring the top musicians of Denver. He was also a member of the Colorado Jazz Orchestra led by Dana Landry, Jim White and David Caffey. While at UNC, he played lead alto with the “UNC Lab Band One” a frequent winner the Downbeat poll for “Best College Big Band” and/or “Outstanding College Big Band Performance”. He also performed with the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra. Previous to Denver, Johan spent seven years in Chicago performing in both jazz and classical settings, including the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra, Chicago Chamber Singers (saxophone soloist), Roosevelt Wind Ensemble, “Blue” Lou Marini (Blues Brother’s movie/soundtrack), Bandarika Salsa Band (voted best Salsa group in Chicago) and numerous others. Dedicated to music education, Johan spent five years as a band director in Illinois and has taught public school kindergarten through 12th grade music. His students have won scholarships at prestigious schools such as the University of Michigan, Juilliard Conservatory, Lawrence Conservatory, Berklee College of Music, North Texas University, Cincinnati Conservatory, Michigan State University, University of Northern Colorado, Northern Illinois University, University of Oregon, University of New Mexico and the New England Conservatory. Johan has performed alongside distinguished musicians Dee Dee Bridgewater, “Blue” Lou Marini, Slide Hampton, Hamiet Bluiett, Ron Carter, Dan Nimmer, Fareed Hague, Willie Pickens, John Corigliano, Fred Wesley, Rufus Reid, Steve Turre, Greg Gisberg, Randy Brecker, Brad Goode, Greg Ward, Brice Winston, Marlene Rosenberg, Art Davis, Boris Kozlov, Orlando Cotto, Liam Teague, Harry Begian, Wayne Bergeron, Bill Holman, Ingrid Jensen, Chris Potter, Johnathan Blake, Paul McKee, Matt Wilson, Ron Miles, Peter Sommer, Dominic Lalli, Steve Roach, Mike Sakash, Lee Konitz, Grace Kelly, Donny McCaslin, and many others. Guitarist/composer Jeff Troxel recently joined the music jazz at the University of Montana. Formerly a music professor at Northwest College in Wyoming, he holds a B.M. from Berklee College of Music, and an MM from the University of Southern California. Jeff has also taught at USC, University of Laverne, Rocky Mountain College, and Central Wyoming College. An author for Mel Bay and FGM Publishing, he also serves on the faculty for several music camps. As a composer, Jeff’s music is featured on several public television shows, and he is a two-time recipient of the Wyoming Arts Council’s Performing Arts Fellowship in music composition. As a guitarist, he has won state flatpicking championships in Wyoming, Utah, as well as the 2003 National Championship. Jeff has shared the stage with John Stowell, Larry Koonse, Pete Huttlinger, Mike Dowling, Bobby Shew, Frank Mantooth, Ronnie Bedford, Jack Reilly, Warren Chiasson, and many others. He maintains an active performance schedule in the region and is available for concerts, clinics and workshops. Thomas Sciple is Associate Professor of Double Bass at the University of Montana teaching both the Jazz and Classical idioms of Double Bass pedagogy. He is currently a member of the Missoula Symphony Orchestra, Missoula Jazz Collective, along with occasional performances with the String Orchestra of the Rockies and the Jeff Troxel Duo. Thomas holds a B.A. in Music from the University of South Alabama and an M.M. in Jazz Studies from the University of New Orleans under the direction of Ellis Marsalis where he studied with Jazz Bassist Bill Huntington. Thomas spent much of his career in New Orleans as a valued jazz journeyman musician performing and recording with many notable artists and groups including Rick Margitza, Ed Peterson, Steve Masakowski, Clint Strong, David Mooney, Don Vappie, Leon Brown, Tony Dagradi, Mike Esnault, Wendel Brunious, Shelly Berg, Jason Marsalis, Jeremy Davenport, Brian Seeger, Troy Davis, Brent Rose, Lumark Gully, Ricky Sebastion, Johnny Vidacovich, Betty Shirley, Chuck Chaplin, Eric Robinson, Miss Sophie Lee, Todd Duke, Matt Johnson, Victor Atkins, Irvin Mayfield, Leah Chase, Wes Anderson, Herman Ernest, Michael Pellera, Bobby Previte, Loren Pickford, Eric Traub, Cindy Scott, Delfeayo Marsalis, Vadim Neslovskyi, Simon Lott, Charlie Fardella, Carlos Malta, Brent Rose, Julian Garcia, Eric Robinson, Jeff Albert, Chris Alford, Mike Clarke, Will Thompson, Mark Diflorio, Brian Prunka, Paulette Wright Davis, Leigh “Lil Queenie” Harris, Rick Trolsen, Al Belletto, Ray Moore, Los Calientes del Son, Charlie Dennard, Dave Ellington and Chevere, Wayne Mareau, Chegadao, Jovino Santos Neto, Marcio Bahia, Andy Bourgeois, Brian Coogan, Rex Gregory, Oscar Rosignolli, Jamison Ross, Chuck Brackman and Vic Shepperd as well as symphonic work in regional Orchestras including the Gulf Coast Symphony, Mobile Symphony, Pensacola Symphony and the Rapides Symphony Orchestra.
