Have you always wondered what’s behind that beautiful front door?
Now’s your chance to discover the history of this Washington landmark.
Please join us on Thursday, October 21, from 4 - 7 pm for wine, beer, and cheese… and a guided tour by Elmwood 1820 partner, Richard Smoot.
View and Listen to short talks by five knowledgeable speakers on topics such as:
History of Elmwood plantation and its owners.Textile analysis of Civil War-era dresses found in the house.Antebellum costumes from the Arts of the Pamlico collection.Description of life at Elmwood during and after the Civil War.Re-enactment of what life was like for African-Americans on the plantation, performed by one costumed member of the Tryon Palace troupe – ”Life on the Lesser Stairs.”
Participants will be divided into small groups and are asked to maintain appropriate social distancing. We respectfully request that masks be worn while touring inside the house, but most activities will be out of doors on the grand porch. Because of Covid concerns, we will provide individually wrapped plates of cheese, fruit, and finger foods.
The Historic Port of Washington Project (HPOW) is a group of dedicated volunteers who are working to preserve and share with the public the history of Washington, N. C. as a port.
