Description
The current national debt is not eight trillion dollars. It is about twenty eight and a half trillion dollars. It started with WWII and has been growing ever since under almost all administrations, democrat and republican. The president, whoever he may be, submits a proposed budget to congress. It is then up to congress to hash it out and approve it. It is not Trump's deficit any more than the trillions of dollars of deficit added during the administrations of Obama, Clinton, Nixon, Eisenhower and so many others. Congress approves budgets. That is their job.
McConnell squashed the democrats bill to increase the debt limit because the bill called for ELIMINATING ALTOGETHER the debt limit until after the 2022 mid-term elections. Sort like writing Bernie, Liz, Nancy and Joe a blank check on your bank account.
The bill Grumpy Mitch proposed is not a fold. It does not suspend the debt limit during the next year when all Americans should be looking closely at what the four and a half trillion dollar Biden budget will cost us, plus adding to the debt. It is for a fixed amount that will tide the country over until December and give democrats time come up with their 51 votes to over ride republicans' 50 votes.
Chuck said yesterday "We can do it. Just (republicans) get out of the way." Well, that is exactly what stopgap cap ceiling increase does. Gives democrats the time to get it done all by themselves. They have over two months to work out the details. They "own" the White House and both sides of congress.
They will also own the fallout in swing states when the informed populous understands just what this is going to cost them when they vote in the fall of 2022.
