NORTH HAVEN, CT — The 2021 municipal election is heating up in North Haven with plenty of races on the ballot. Voters will head to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 2 and cast their ballots for the Board of Selectmen, Board of Education, Town Clerk/Tax Collector and more. North Haven Patch asked candidates to answer questions about their campaigns and will be publishing candidate profiles as election day draws near. Carl Kordek, 31, is running for First Selectman in North Haven as a Democrat. Occupation: Family: Mother Kathleen, Father Carl B, Sister Jennifer, Brother in law John, Niece, Nephew. Family in government: No The single biggest issue in town is ______, and I plan to do this about it: The most pressing issue is the town itself, our North Haven. We could beat around the bush for hours, days, months, and years debating what needs improvement, but everything needs attention. From the sidewalk quality in neighborhoods, drainage problems in low lying areas, budgetary processes in town hall, parks and recreation, lack of diversity and inclusion in town, public safety, resources for seniors. Everything needs our attention. Problems are constantly appearing and growing, that is the nature of any town, but to have it be mitigated at times doesn't solve the problems. Every individual in our town needs a voice in local government, someone who can hear them out every day and prepare the right steps in fixing the issues presented. Simply put, and clear communication and transparency are the necessary tools to bring the needs of citizens to the forefront of conversations. Critical differences between me and my opponents: The most obvious is my youth, it's a friend that always seems to follow me around. It comes with a world perspective that is beneficial to understanding the eventual problems we will face in a North Haven of the 2020's. This decade will be one of the most transformative as we have seen already and my skill in developing modern solutions is one tool from my academic and real-world experiences over the past fifteen years which will help navigate the town through rough roads along the way. The future is a vast unknown and being ahead of that in a proactive way is necessary instead of a reactive method that only limits our resources and time, our community deserves to have a plan, not just for today, and but tomorrow and the days ahead. Accomplishments: My academic accomplishments at North Haven High School ('08), The Disney University ('09), Gateway Community College, Charter Oak State College (AS, BS, '18) and Albertus Magnus College(MBA, '21) have been numerous. In addition, my time in the tourism and security industries has provided me with many awards, primarily related to public safety, business, and operations management. The true value of everything achieved though was being able to help as many people as I could daily, and they were the reward and the greatest accomplishment. Other issues: Our town is thriving compared to many of our neighbors, but we are not doing enough to capitalize on our strengths or address our shortcomings. Being First Selectman is not just about the day-to-day business or growing of the grand list. It is about listening, being proactive, solving problems creatively, and being a champion for our community—both who we are today, and who we want to be tomorrow. That is why, when it comes to the issues we face, I am less concerned about the next two years than the next 20 years. North Haven needs a plan, and not just for today but tomorrow and the days ahead. What else would you like voters to know about you? This is a moment for us to unite as one, put aside any past differences, and and build the sort of town that we can be proud of. My dream is that post-pandemic North Haven rises to heights like we have never seen before and becomes the sort of place that uplifts every community member to their full potential.
