Newark Cop, Social Workers Give Hand Up To Homeless Residents

NEWARK, NJ — A Newark police officer and social service workers with the city recently gave a hand up to some residents experiencing homelessness, authorities reported Friday. The Newark Police Department offered more details about the encounter in a statement: "3rd Precinct Community Service Officer J. Tavares, while in the area of McCarter Highway and Edison Place, noticed a couple sheltered under the bridge. After speaking and offering services to them, City of Newark Department of Health and Community Wellness were contacted. With their assistance, the couple was provided with shelter placement and other services. Special thanks to Ms. Winter and Ms. Treasure of the City's Homelessness Task Force." More people are experiencing homelessness in Essex County than any other part of the state, according to the most recent Point-in-Time count from Monarch Housing Associates.
