Welcome to the Sacramento Daily Patch Newsletter! This is where you will find all of the best news and events happening in Sacramento for Saturday October 9th, 2021! First, today's weather: Mostly sunny and cool. High: 72 Low: 47. Here are the top stories in Sacramento today: Wacky, but true, according to SMF (Sac Metro Field) Columbus Day weekend is one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. Whether flying out or picking up loved ones, customers are encouraged to arrive early, anticipate delays and be prepared by checking parking lot status on their website. I'm not sure what those Columbus Day traditions are that y'all are traveling to fulfill, but plan ahead and enjoy! (Saccounty.net) From the ashes of disaster grow the roses of success, or at least that's what Barber's Shop Automotive is banking on, and with its demonstrated attitude and resilience, I'll bank on that with them! The business was burned to the ground by arson last October, right in the middle of the pandemic. The iconic Alfa Romeo sign over the door even melted. But that setback isn't going to keep it down. The shop is having a grand opening in its new location at 16th and F Street, with the same vibe it had before. The new location is another historic building that dates back to the 1920s and was once a blacksmith shop. It includes plenty of classic car memorabilia, something the shop was famous for to begin with. In need of repair? So is this business, so give it your business and watch it bloom! (CBS Sacramento) A new documentary called "Prom(ish)" follows the lives of six high schoolers across the United States to see how the pandemic has shaped their lives and leads up to prom night. Guess who's in a starring role? Our very own Alyssa Yuke, a C.K. McClatchy High School student in Sacramento who is now a senior. Yuke says she learned that in-person learning is a "blessing in disguise and you don't realize that until you are at home in front of a computer for six hours a day." "Prom(ish)" debuts on Hearst's new streaming app Very Local. You can install the Very Local Sacramento app on Roku, Amazon Fire, Apple TV and Android TV. (KCRA3) 'The Downtown Sacramento Foundation announced its seven finalists in the "Calling All Dreamers" retail competition contest that awards the winner a downtown storefront. The winners will receive $20,000 and a start-up package with a value of $120,000 with in-kind services and resources to help launch their dreams. One of the semi-finalists is hoping for sweet success as she follows her dream into the creamy land of ice cream at the Sweet Tooth Factory. She envisions a party atmosphere where grandparents can spoil their grandkids and everyone gets a scoop. The public can cast their votes online at CallingAllDreamers.org by 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 1. People can also vote in person at Nash & Proper's storefront, a former winner, at 1023 K street Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturday through Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. (ABC10) After more than 1000 complaints dating back a year, a class action lawsuit has been filed against the City of Folsom by property owners suffering costly 'pinhole' leaks in copper pipes, officials confirmed this week. The leaks are causing tens-of-thousands of dollars in repairs for homeowners. The City of Folsom hired two outside parties to investigate the cause late last year, and found out it was likely the water creating the pinholes, officials said. While the companies pointed out that the city meets all state and federal drinking water standards, it also said that the water's purity, combined with a pH above 9.0 and the use of chlorine, "could contribute to pitting of copper pipe, especially at sites with impurities in the pipe material or where particulate has settled." For residents, it's a waiting game to see if their pipes will spring leaks and if so, where, when and how bad will it be?
