Northampton Residents Protest After Wawa Meeting Cancelled Again

NORTHAMPTON, PA — Dozens of Northampton residents gathered outside the township building on Wednesday to protest a proposed Super Wawa in Holland. A special meeting scheduled to discuss the business' land development proposal had been cancelled just hours earlier. The meeting had already been postponed at least once before, as the Board of Supervisors aims to both discuss the controversial proposal and hear public opinion. The 7 p.m. meeting scheduled to review the land development proposal was cancelled on Wednesday afternoon. Brett Duffey, a vocal opponent of the plan, said that many residents had organized their schedules around being able to attend. So instead, they held a protest of their own. "Many of these people showed up for this unplanned protest despite the meeting being called off," he wrote in an email to Patch. "It was a testament to their dedication to this issue that they feel so passionate about." Many of the residents present on Wednesday fear that the 5,585 square ft. gas station and market — with a location close to residences at the nexus of Rocksville, Buck, and Holland Roads — would have a negative impact when it comes to air and light pollution, traffic, and loitering in the area. It is unclear whether or not resident dissatisfaction around the proposal informed the cancellations. "At the request of representatives of Provco Pinegood Northampton, LLC, the Wawa land development plan application has been removed from the Board of Supervisors October 6, 2021 special meeting agenda," officials wrote in a message on Wednesday, adding, "The public will be notified when a new hearing date for the Wawa land development plan is scheduled."
