SANDY SPRINGS, GA — Sandy Springs Police Officer Patrick Burt went beyond his usual duties when he helped deliver a baby on Monday. Burt was on routine patrol when he saw a vehicle stopped on the side of the highway, the department posted on its Facebook page. "As the officer went to investigate further, little did he know that he was about to help delivery a baby," the department wrote. "There is no such thing as 'routine' in our line of work, and every encounter might come with surprises such as this one. The officer followed up with mom and baby at the hospital, and they were both doing very well. Baby Noah will have a great story to tell when he grows up!" Burt told 11Alive that he was going to work when he "saw a car pulled over on New Northside Drive, and a man motioning toward the vehicle. According to Burt, the man was frantically motioning toward the passenger side door, muttering the words 'baby' and 'Northside.' The mother was in active labor, the TV station said, and Burt knew he had to assist the mother. "It's not a normal part of the job," Burt told the TV station. "I was ready to do what I'm going to do, what I have to do for my community or anybody that needs help. I'm there for them. So just to me, it was just another day, another part of the job." Burt visited the mother and baby in the hospital, and even gave them a Sandy Springs Police K-9 stuffed dog.
