CUMMING, GA — Two men have been arrested after the car they were fleeing deputies in plunged into Lake Lanier.
The driver, Edward Anthony, 18, of Alpharetta, was charged with DUI drugs, obstruction, fleeing/attempting to elude, speeding, reckless driving, and failure to report striking a fixed object.
The passenger, Angel De Los Santos Cruz, 19, of Johns Creek, was charged with obstruction.
In the early morning hours of Oct. 2, a Forsyth County deputy was conducting speed enforcement along Ga. 400 northbound when he saw a vehicle traveling 90 mph. A traffic stop was initiated, but the vehicle fled. The pursuit continued down Ga. 400, reaching speeds between 110 and 130 mph.
The car eventually exited at Bald Ridge Marina Road, continuing to speed before breaking through the barrier at the Marina.
With nowhere else to go, the occupants exited the car while it was rolling, deputies said. The car continued a slow roll toward the lake, clipping another vehicle before drifting into the water and sinking to the bottom.
One occupant was apprehended, while the other ran. With the assistance of K9 Ivo, the other man was found hiding under the deck of the marina office.
The car had to be towed out of the lake, and deputies said it didn't belong to the occupants, but was borrowed from a friend.
