WORCESTER, MA — A large group of bicyclists will travel from Springfield to Worcester on Saturday for the 2021 Ride To Remember, which will focus on the nine Worcester firefighters who have died since the 1999 Cold Storage fire. The ride will begin in Springfield around 7 a.m. and travel west along Route 20 and Route 9. The up to 500 bicyclists will reach Worcester around noon and then travel across the city escorted by fire trucks to the Worcester Fire Department headquarters along Grove Street. The riders will use James Street, Stafford Street, Park Avenue, Sagamore Road and Grove Street while in Worcester. Once at fire headquarters, there will be a ceremony to remember the Cold Storage firefighters — Lt. James Lyons, Lt. Timothy Jackson, Thomas Spencer, Paul Brotherton, Jeremiah Lucey and Joeseph McGuirk — and Lt. Jason Menard, Christopher Roy and John Davies. A part of the ceremony will also focus on Officer Manny Familia, including a donation to the 267 Foundation set up in his memory. The Ride To Remember will also recognize two officers who rescued an 89-year-old woman from a burning home off Shrewsbury Street this winter. After the ceremony, many bicyclists will return to Springfield along the same route. They are expected to leave near 2 p.m., according to Worcester police. Find more details about the Ride To Remember on the group's website.
