Description
On June 5, 1944, I boarded an Air Army C-47 at 23:00 hours as part of the 101st Airborne Screamin Eagles. Our mission was to provide infantry support for the scheduled main assault that was to occur at Utah Beach later that morning in support of Operation Overlord.
On the morning of June 6th, our platoon had dropped 15 kilometers North of our scheduled Drop Zone. By noon that day, I was captured by German forces after being shot in the leg and shoulder. I spent the rest of World War 2 in a prison camp in Prussia. Liberated on January 31, 1945, by Soviet forces, I was repatriated with elements of the 3rd Army on Valentine's Day 1945.
After the war, I married my high school sweetheart (rest in peace sweet angel) and raised 3 daughters and 2 sons. One of my sons died while serving with the Marine Corp in Vietnam during the Tet Offensive. Today, 3 of my grandchildren are medical doctors healing the sick and treating Covid-19 patients here in southeast Michigan. Two of my great-grandchildren are officers and pilots serving in the US Air Force. Mr. President, my son, my two precious great-grandchildren and the men I jumped and served with all those years ago are not suckers or losers. We are PATRIOTS. For the first time in my life, I will not be supporting the Republican candidate for President of the United States, and that breaks my heart
