FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — Fairfax County's first Countywide Strategic Plan was approved by the Board of Supervisors Tuesday, setting a countywide vision for the next 10 to 20 years and prioritizes initiative in the next few years.
The plan approval follows plan development and refinement as well as community engagement in 2019 and a pause in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While a strategic plan was proposed for the Board of Supervisors to adopt before the pandemic hit, the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted new and existing challenges for residents. The plan was updated to account for the pandemic's impact, and County Executive Bryan Hill proposed the final plan in February 2021.
"Now more than ever, we must intentionally align existing government and community plans and priorities to respond to the areas of greatest importance to our residents, and strategically focus our resources on these priorities over the next 5, 10, 20 years and beyond," Hill writes in the introduction to the plan.
The plan's main objectives are to set a community-driven vision for the next 10 to 20 years, align and integrate issue-specific and department-specific plans, focus and prioritize initiatives over the next three to five years, and communicate progress on outcomes. The framework has nine priority areas based on community feedback: cultural and recreational opportunities, economic opportunity, effective and efficient government, empowerment and support for residents facing vulnerability, health and environment, housing and neighborhood livability, lifelong education and learning, mobility and transportation, and safety and security.
