ADA-Accessible Paths, Parking Coming To Centennial Park South

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Centennial Park South in Ellicott City will become more handicap-accessible thanks to a revamping project set to begin Oct. 18. Howard County Recreation & Parks will be adding ADA-accessible pathways and parking, and improving a restroom facility, boat rental area and replacing wooden retaining walls. "Our parks should be accessible and enjoyed by our residents of all ages and abilities," Howard County Executive Calvin Ball said. "These improvements not only maintain the existing amenities at Centennial Park but improve access for our residents and visitors with disabilities." An existing pedestrian pathway will be reconstructed to become ADA-accessible and widened to allow for emergency access. The pathway will connect the new parking area to existing pathways, the boat ramp, restrooms and the outdoor F. Leonard Dunn Amphitheater. A micro-bioretention facility with native plants will be constructed to improve water quality within the construction area. Weather permitting, the project is expected to be completed by spring 2022. While the south lower restroom facility, boat rental area and pathway section from the boat ramp to the amphitheater will be closed during this time, the south upper restroom facility and the rest of Centennial Park will remain open. A detour route, informational signage and a map will be placed at both ends of the project area and at all Centennial Lake loop intersections.
