ROUND ROCK, TX — Violent and property crimes have seen a slight increase in Round Rock last year, according to data released by the FBI in its 2020 uniform crime report. In Round Rock, the FBI estimated crime statistics based on reports from the Round Rock Police Department last year. The department began submitting National Incident-Based Reporting System data to the FBI on Aug. 1, 2020. The department has been submitting crime data to the FBI for years before the federal agency transitioned to a new system data. The FBI has issued a caution about the crime data coming in at the local levels, however. Live in Round Rock? Lists comparing cities and counties "provide no insight into the numerous variables that shape crime in a given state, county, city, town, tribal area or region," the FBI said in a statement. "Consequently, they lead to simplistic and/or incomplete analyses that often create misleading perceptions adversely affecting communities and their residents," the statement continued. "Valid assessments are possible only with careful study and analysis of the range of unique conditions affecting each local law enforcement jurisdiction." Round Rock saw 84 violent crimes and 94 offenses last year, according to new FBI data. Figures for previous years weren't available. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety's 2020 Crime In Texas data, there were 165 violent crimes and 2,235 property crimes reported in Round Rock in 2019. The same data reports there were 187 violent crimes and 2,296 property crimes reported in 2020. This was a slight jump in 2019. Nicholas Olivier, a spokesperson for Round Rock police, confirmed with Patch on Thursday that violent crime has increased about 3.5 percent since 2019. However, the biggest jump the department has seen in the past couple years are motor vehicle burglaries and thefts. The data reports 234 burglaries and 94 auto thefts were reported in 2020. This same report rings true for neighboring departments like Leander PD, who've also seen an increase in motor vehicle crimes. Olivier said with the marginal increase in these crimes last year, it's hard to determine what lead to them. Nationwide, the FBI reported an increase in violent crime for the first time in four years. The number of property crimes reported nationally dropped for the 18th year in a row. Violent crime was up 5.2 percent in 2020 from the 2019 number, the FBI said in a news release. Violent crimes are labeled as homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault; property crimes are listed as arson, burglary, larceny theft and motor vehicle theft. Among violent crimes, murder and non-negligent manslaughter reports saw the sharpest one-year uptick from 2019 to 2020, at 29.4 percent, the FBI said. Property crimes — including burglaries, vehicle thefts and arson — dropped 8.1 percent from 2019 to 2020, the FBI data shows.
