JERSEY CITY, NJ —Ward E Councilman James Solomon continues to collect endorsements ahead of the Nov. 2 election. The latest came Thursday from the New York-based Hotel Trades Council (HTC), which is the union for hotel and gaming workers in New York and Northern New Jersey. Solomon, who is running against Jersey City Municipal Prosecutor Jake Hudnut, already has been endorsed by the New Jersey Working Families Party (NJWFP), the Downtown Small Business Owners and the Harsimus Cove Neighborhood Association this week. A representative from Solomon's campaign said a formal endorsement from the 32BJ SEIU is expected Friday. Solomon was endorsed by Our Revolution New Jersey last week. The HTC endorsement came despite the union having endorsed Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop and his slate of council candidates in Wards A,B,C,D and F last February. Hudnut, the mayor's chosen candidate in Ward E, had not yet entered the race against Solomon at that point. Solomon thanked the HTC for its endorsement in a Thursday post on Twitter. "This campaign is about lifting up the working people of Jersey City and as council member they will always be my priority and I am honored to work alongside HTC to keep fighting for the middle class and working families," Solomon wrote. It is an honor to be endorsed by @NYHTC This campaign is about lifting up the working people of Jersey City and as Council Member they will always be my priority and I am honored to work alongside HTC to keep fighting for the middle class and working families. https://t.co/EG9gWpnHKP— James Solomon (@SolomonforJC) October 7, 2021 In a statement of endorsement, Rich Maroko, president of HTC, said Solomon has repeatedly stood alongside the union, notably in its fight against the proliferation of Airbnbs throughout Jersey City, which resulted in a 2019 ballot referendum that placed regulations on Airbnb's operations in the city. "Over the last four years, (Solomon) has stood up for hotel workers and for all working-class people in Downtown Jersey City. Based on that track record, we know that we can count on Councilman Solomon to advocate for our members and for working people throughout Jersey City," Maroko said. Solomon said HTC cares deeply about protecting workers and ensuring they are paid fairly "When Airbnb tried to impose their will on our community, I was proud to team up with HTC to tell them 'no,'" Solomon said. The election is on November 2nd, and early voting will take place from October 23-31.
