Welcome to the Sacramento Daily Patch Newsletter! This is where you will find all of the best news and events happening in Sacramento for Friday October 8th, 2021! First, today's weather: Clouds breaking and cool. High: 67 Low: 48. Here are the top stories today in Sacramento: If you like to smoke your food, Sacramento's newest establishment is for you! It's not a smoke shop or a cannabis store. It's a restaurant called Smoke and Beers. And smoke is their thing! They'll smoke your prime rib and your lemonade (or old fashioned) to go with it. If you want a break from the smoke, they have a ton of taps for your beer drinking enjoyment. Come out for their grand opening tonight for some smoke you can actually enjoy! (FOX40) Many people in Sacramento, as good citizens, stop watering their yards during droughts. Stopping the watering of your lawn is the fastest way to reduce water usage, as most of us in the region know. But there is a new campaign to educate the public about watering the trees in your yard. A major lesson learned from the last drought is that while your grass can take a drought, often your trees can not and it can take many years to grow a new tree for the shade that they provide. Stephanie Robinson, communications manager for the Sacramento Tree Foundation cautioned, "Unfortunately, it will take decades to replace the mature trees we lost during the last drought." To see one way to effectively manage and water your trees during drought, click here to watch a video tied to this campaign. (KCRA3) Be aware, if you are thinking of traveling this weekend, three Sierra mountain passes between Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park closed Thursday ahead of the forecast winter storm and are not expected to reopen until Saturday at the earliest. Caltrans officials said the road closures on routes off of U.S. Highway 395 began Thursday at noon on State Route 108 at Sonora Pass north of Bridgeport. State Route 89 at Monitor Pass south of Lake Tahoe closed at 2 p.m. and State Route 120 near Lee Vining, California at 5 p.m. on Thursday. (KTLA3)This week's high school football action is headlined by a huge game between Folsom and De La Salle (Concord). This one could determine who represents Northern California in the CIF Open Division state championship ... especially if the Bulldogs win. The De La Salle Spartans are 4-0 against Folsom since 2012 and have won every game by at least 14 points, but we'll get 'em this year! Go Bulldogs! (MaxPreps)You want to see a great pumpkin? THIS is a great pumpkin! Leonardo Urena of Napa won the Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off at the Giant Pumpkin Festival in Elk Grove last weekend with a whopping 1,623 pound pumpkin! Charlie Brown would be proud. How the heck did he get that thing from Napa to Elk Grove?? (Elk Grove Tribune) Today's Sacramento Daily is brought to you by our friends at Verizon. It's National Pierogi Day and I love me some dumplings... but finding a pierogi in Sacramento proved to be a bit of a challenge.
