PLAINFIELD, IL — Construction for Springbank Trail, which connected downtown Plainfield to Springbank, is officially complete. To celebrate the project, Plainfield Mayor John Argoudelis was joined by the Village Board and officials from the Plainfield Park District and Riverfront Foundation for a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday. The new trail links Mather Woods and Settlers' Park, includes paved segments from Renwick Road into Mather Woods, and extends the trail at the riverfront south of the pedestrian bridge. This phase of the Springbank Trail project included about 4,200 feet of trail, completed by Avanti Properties Group. Going forward, more extensions will be laid to include an underpass beneath the Canadian National railroad to connect the riverfront and Settlers' Park. An additional segment south of Renwick Road will also be added, according to a news release from the village. "This project is an example of the progress we can make in Plainfield when we all work together," Argoudelis said at the ribbon-cutting ceremony this week. "It is so important that one of our unspoiled natural areas remains in the core of our village for everyone to enjoy at no cost to our residents. This is an important part of our growth — to provide natural green space to escape from the world for a bit." The Springbank trail project is part of the Riverfront Master Plan, according to officials. The trail's construction is listed on the village's website under the Master Plan, which was adopted in March 2021 and designed to be implemented over a 10-year period. The plan aims to "enhance the quality of the river and improve the view from dedicated overlook areas." According to the plan, an area around Springbank Trail is also home to diverse native plants and species of birds including the Bald Eagle, Monarch Butterfly and Goldfinches, which are "bound to become residents."
