ORLAND PARK, IL — An 18-year-old Florissant, Missouri, man was charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle and forgery after police said he attempted to use a fraudulent check to purchase a car. According to Orland Park police, on Monday, a black Dodge Challenger pulled into the front parking lot of the Orland Park Police Department. Police said the registration did not match the vehicle. A man arrived and attempted to sell his Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 to the driver of the Challenger, Armon Cameron, police said. Cameron gave the owner of the Jeep a fraudulent check for $23,500, police said. According to police, Cameron had purchased the Challenger on Sunday in Iowa using another fraudulent check. Police arrested Cameron and took him to the Bridgeview Courthouse, where he was issued a $5,000 bond. The Orland Park Police Department said it has investigated an increasing amount of fraud stemming from the sale of items through social media platforms such as Facebook Marketplace. In June, police said a man drove from Michigan to sell his 2017 Corvette in the front lot of the Orland Park Police Department. Police later discovered that the buyer used a fake account on Facebook Marketplace, purchasing the vehicle using a fraudulent check for $72,000. "The Orland Park Police Department would like to advise sellers to be vigilant when selling items over the internet," the department said in a news release. "Do not be lulled into a false sense of security when the buyer agrees to meet in public places, even local police departments." Anyone charged with a crime is innocent until proven guilty in court.
