LOS ANGELES, CA — Los Angeles police shot and wounded a woman during a hostage standoff at a homeless encampment in the downtown Los Angeles Wednesday night. The standoff followed reports of an active shooter in the area, prompting authorities to shut down the Hollywood (101) Freeway.
Following reports of gunfire, Los Angeles Police Department officers arrived on the scene Wednesday in the area of Spring and Arcadia streets near the Hollywood (101) Freeway and heard gunfire, according to the LAPD. The standoff began about 10:45 p.m. Wednesday and lasted for about an hour.
A SWAT team was called to the scene, and police began searching the encampment where they believed the suspect had hidden inside a tent, the LAPD reported.
The woman came out of a tent about 11:40 p.m., police said.
"She was armed (with) a gun (and) had a hostage," the police statement said. "At that time, there was an officer-involved shooting."
The woman was wounded, and was taken to a hospital in unknown condition. No other injuries were reported. The gun was recovered at the scene at scene, police said.
Authorities did not release the woman's identity and condition. No one else was injured in the shooting, but investigators are continuing to comb through the encampment to make sure there are no other victims inside the tents.
Investigators are also working to determine what led up to the standoff.
"There's no physical evidence that's been located that tells investigators right now what the suspect was shooting at," Los Angeles Police Department Detective Meghan Aguilar told KTLA.
